Melissa.....first......make sure that the wood under there is anything you would want to see stained. Often wood is painted in an old house for a reason - it is just pine - not oak or walnut, etc.

Secondly - DO NOT SCRAPE IT! It is likely to have lead there somewhere - the lead dust is not good for you.

Find yourself an ICI Paint Store or a Devoe Paint Dealer. They will have a Devoe Coatings product called Hydro-Strip. It is water based - and it works very well.

Follow the directions they give you with the product - and you are good to go!
