Removing lead paint

I have bedroom and closet doors that have a layer of lead based paint underneath the top layer. I want to repaint the doors, but they have paint chips, so I cannot just paint over them. I think sanding is out of the question due to the possibility of spreading lead particles. What is the best way to remove or deal with these lead painted doors? Should I do the
job myself or have a professional remove the lead paint?
