This is so ironic, but we just did this very project last weekend. We took down the doors, removed residual laminate with an iron. We then used a product called "Goof Off" that removed the adhesive very well, and was also very inexpensive. We used a wire wheel and belt sander to smooth all surfaces, and then painted them white.
