removing ceramic tile

I want to remove the ceramic tile from my kitchen floor (I think its cemented over plywood but I'm not sure). I also want to remove the tile around my fireplace -its cemented directly to the drywall. What is the best way to remove the tile in each case? What tools do I need? I read somewhere that I could use a heating gun or an iron to heat the tiles and that this would make removal easier. True?
