Removing brick wall in a church

Our church is planning a renovation project. There has been discussion about removing some of the brick wall on either side of the altar. Although this would open the inner part of the altar a little more than it is now I do not feel that gaining 1'3" on each side warrants the expense which our architect says will be about $2,500 a side. This is a small church with a mostly elderly congregation, that doesn't question much because they don't realize they should and can. What is your opinion on a move like this and do you feel the price quote is reasonable? Carol Ferris
