removing asbestos basement tile

My new wife and I just moved into an old home, and recently woke up with water in our partially finished basement. We ripped up the carpet, and found some nasty looking tile. We found out from a "tile guy" that it was asbestos.
We would really like to get this tile up, but it is stuck like tar to the concrete floor. A contractor estimated the removal cost at $500, but he thought we could easily do it ourselves. He suggested pouring water and vinegar on the tile, let it sit for 24 hours, and scraping it up. The acid in the vinegar was supposed to soak into the tile, and separate it from the concrete. This didn't work very well.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to use to "eat" away this tile so I can scrape it up? Or, should I pay the $500 to get it done by someone else?
