removing a load bearing wall

Posted by caroline on February 10th, 2001 08:00 PM

I'm removing a load wall between the kitchen & living room. It's a 1st floor wall of a 2 story house over a basement. the span is 26 feet. I've been told a 4 ply 10inch laminated beam will span 23 feet. does anyone know if a steele I beam could go the whole 26 feet without being deeper than 10 inches. I'd really like to be no more than 8 inches hanging down with no columns. thank you
