removing a layer of paint to uncover the original red paint!

I purchased an 1820-1850's cabinet that is painted green--but the original red paint is showing through in places. I want to remove more of the green to let the original show through--but do not want to strip this cabinet. How can I safely do this without harming the original 1850's paint? What should I use--sandpaper, chemical, denatured alcohol....? Responses to aportofe54@msn.com
