Julie, if you have hardwood floors, you should definately remove the staples. Someday, yopu or a future owner might decide to remove the carpet and refinish the hardwood. Just pounding the staples down will make them harder to remove then and increase the chances of leaving little pieces of metal in the wood. The metal will damage the expensive sandpaper used for refinishing and, if the metal is left in, will cause a brown rust mark under the finish. Having a pair of needle nose pliers to grab the legs of the staples that break off will help a lot.
