Oh man what a messy job, but it can be done. First you need a strong wide putty scraper and a couple of gallons of Paint Thinner or Turpentine.

The turp will cut the mastic and the knife will assist you in scraping up the gooey stuff. Be sure and discard it where the kids and dogs won't drag it off and become permanent taffy.

Take a section at a time and saturate the area with the turp and start scraping.

Be in a well ventilated area. No smoking.

This will work, but is very time consuming. Others may have other curealls, this is mine.

Be sure to use water proof and exterior mastic or glue when applying your new stuff.

And, you really do not have to get up all the stuff, it will lay down and not be noticable with the new carpet. I am refering to the glue. The bulk you want up.
