Removal of 11 yr. old linoleum floor

Hi, I just got a price on installation of a new linoleum floor and the install cost consisted of $1.25 per sq. ft for the vinyl install, $585 and the same sq. ft charge for skim coating the existing linoleum floor $585 more. Couldn't I just remove the old floor and get down to the original sub floor that the builder put in and save myself alot of money. All comments greatly appreciated. Thank you!
