refinishing painted wood floor

After uncovering carpet, padding, vinyl and hard thin particle board, we discovered that the floor of our 100 year old house was painted maroon in one of the rooms. I'd like to remove the paint and polyutethane the old floor. I'm not sure if the floor is pine or hardwood. Has anyone had experience with using paint remover on an entire 16'X23' floor? Can you sand a pine floor with a belt sander? The floor has some grooves and gouges that wouldn't sand out-plus I want to keep the "rustic look" that the floor has acquired over the last century. Any suggestions?
