Refinishing Oak floors

Posted by Mark on October 19th, 2000 07:23 PM

I have oak flooring that requires refinishing. What I would like to do is to restore the flooring to it's original condition. They were originally done in 3lb orange shellac. My question is, do you know what blend of shellac was used back then. I have done a test strip using 3lb orange and it appears to be much darker than what is currently there. Also, I am not sure of the durability of shellac. Is it possible to add a varnish over the shellac, or, is the shellac as hard as a varnish to start with? Any help would be appreciated.
