Refinishing Hardwood Floors

Tina, you would not need to strip the floors
because the sanding will remove any old finish.
You can rent a floor sander from a rental store.
You must be very careful and follow all instructions
so that you do not leave grooves and marks in the
wood, but I sucessfully refinished a dining room
floor by myself using one of these sanders. You can
then stain and finish the floor as you like. Be
sure to also rent an edge sander (for the perimeter
of the room which the regular sander cannot reach).
It's hard, dirty work, but extremely satisfying. Also
if you look down this bulletin board you will find
lots of other hints and suggestions on floor
refinishing. Good luck. I've just purchased a 92-year
old house myself and have my work cut out for me too.
