refinishing groove plank floors

My kitchen floor is in desperate need. I have 3 small children so you can imagine the abuse it has to take. We've only lived here a year but the house was built in 1966. I don't know how old the floor is. It's a plank floor with the v shaped grooves inbetween. Do I sand this type of floor also? It is dull and scratched. I would like to fix it myself but have no idea where to start. It needs about 5 coats of something. LOL.
Please help. I've been posting everywhere with no response.
