Unless there is a problem with the old flooring ie., missing boards, large cracks, deep gouges, mastic, etc., there should be no problem with refinishing it. I would get several estimates. If the floor is in good shape it should cost about 1/2 of new to refinish it. Even if it is in bad shape it should not be cheaper to put in a new floor.
