Hi, Mike. Bob is on assignment installing Palladian windows in the Washington Monument so perhaps he will permit me to answer. The reason that barns are painted red is that red lead paint was the cheapest and most protective paint available 100 years ago. The original paint was just a mix of linseed oil and red lead, or the oil and white lead for the trim. Since then, it is mainly just traditional.
