Recessed radiators vs. free-standing radiators

We live in a 75-year old house with steam heat radiators. Most are recessed under windows, but a few are free-standing. As we re-do the rooms I was wondering if it makes sense to take out the free-standing ones and put in recessed ones. We have plaster walls (brick exterior) so we would have to tear into the wall, re-pipe and re-do the floor where the current valve pipe sticks out of. We do want to replace the radiators since they are old - it might be easier to just replace free-standing with free-standing. Please let me know what you think.
