Thanks for the post. I've since spoken with a friend who has installed windows in the past.
He suggested taking the whole old window out.
He said to take out the glass, make one cut in the old frame and pull the whole thing into the house to take it out. This will leave the coved molding stucco intact. There will be some drywall patching to do now, but the windows will fit better, with less chance for the fin style flange to let in water. Thanks again,
