If you have an aversion to chemicals you might be surprised to find out that they are really not necessary to remove wallpaper. I have used "wallwik" to safely and easily remove wallpaper from first my bathroom (heavy duty waterproof wallpaper) and then my bedroom (normal wallpaper.) Each room took about 2.5 hours using this product. As far as I know it is only available through QVC on their cable channel or through their website.

Apparently the key is using the scoring tool and letting water seep behind the paper. The wallpaper simply peels off in entire sheets. Maybe the chemicals on the market speed up this process but the wallwik sheets keep the wallpaper in contact with water long enough for this process to occur without any hazardous substances.
