The odor is not one I've ever smelled before, although it could be described as "almost a sewage smell", but not mildew. It fluctuates in intensity, and can be smelled right on the wall surface.
I mainly used hot water in a sprayer and a scraper to peel the paper. And used several methods for cleaning the walls - TSP, DIF, Spic and Span... I wasn't absolutely sure after all of the scrubbings, that all of the glue was gone, but didn't know what else to do, so went ahead and painted. I thought if there was any glue left that the problem I would see would be cracked paint, but the coverage is great; no problems there.
Someone my husband talked to recommended a Benjamin Moore product called "Fresh Start", but the Sherwin Williams guy I talked to said ProBlocker, being oil-based, would work better. Of course, as I discovered, I had already used ProBlocker.
