In reply to Ceiling Fan Switch Wiring by AG on June 9th, 1998 09:43 PM [Go to top of thread]

I think you need to find out which wire is the hot (120v)wire.
1/ go to the wall switch and test it and see which side of the switch is hot (120v)
2/ Turn off the power to the room switch take the fan/light off the ceiling.
3/separate the wires (there should be 2 wires a white and a black wire) and then turn on the power, turn on the switch ,then test each wire to a ground the find out which wire is the hot 120v wire.
4/now that you have determined the hot 120v wire, turn off the power again.
5/ now connect the black 120v wire to the black wire on the fan/light, then connect the other white neutral wire to the white wire on the fan/light.
6/mount the fan/light
7/turn on power and switch on the light switch.
It should work. Make sure your not connecting the neutral wire to ground on the fan.
Be carefull with electricity it can kill.
Always turn off the power when working with anything electrical.
good luck
