Hi Roberta

Raising your ceiling height is, for all practical purposes, not feasible. It would require removing all the roofing material, pulling off the roof deck (probably 1X6's), dissassembling the rafters, then tearing off the existing ceiling, removing the ceiling joists (while temporarily supporting the outer walls), then constructing small stud wall cripples over the existing walls with a special anchoring system, then reinstalling joists, rafters (or trusses), roof deck and roofing. Wiring and plumbing will also have to be modified. me, you don't want to do this! (smile)

But to get some ideas for good upgrades to your house that are feasible, probably the best magazine for this would be Fine Homebuilding. Better Homes has lots of pretty pictures but really doesn't give much in detail or explain how something was changed.
