Actually, check the Department of Energy recommendations for the R value for your area, here in Mn, they have it set as R49, code is R38, but my guess is that R49 will really pay off in the long run. In order to get an R49, you'll probably have to have quite a bit more, but I can't tell you without knowing the product getting used. If a contractor says 18 inches, make sure he tells you the brand he will use, and make sure he accounts for settling of the batt.
