I dont know if I have an answere for you phill, but I have a question that might bring some more responces. What about exhaust fans in the ceiling to remove heat building up in the second floor?I'm talking about bathroom size fans that you would not have to run constantly.I've seen in new homes, mostly high end, returns up near the ceiling and down by the floor that can be opened and closed depending on the season.Open the bottom in the winter to draw the cold air, close the bottom open the top in summer to draw the hot air.Exhaust fans would work the same way except the air would'nt be recirculated.Am I making any sense or am I full of hot air?
