JC, I first thought you were attempting to remove a section of cast iron at a joint, but you mention a slab floor, so I assume you're actually speaking of just removing the cast toilet flange from a lead pipe extension; is this right? (Often the last section of pipe leading to the toilet flange is actually lead, not cast.)

If so, and the new flange's gasket will seat deep enough to be beyond the joint to the pipe, you should be just fine installing it directly onto the existing as you mention, but I would find a way to secure it, even if it doesn't seem to move around.
