Dear Bob,

I have a cathedral ceiling with a red brick fireplace that I needs updating. I would like to lighten up the fireplace, but not spend a fortune in the process.

One major problem facing this facelift is the fact that the mortar installed 18 years ago is defective. On a very heavy rain, the mortar acts as a sponge and eventually becomes wet inside at the height of the ceiling. We have tried expensive sealers, new flashing, and even a new roof. Everything checks out, but the problem persists. One mason told us we would have to tear down the outside structure at the roof line and rebuild to prevent the problem.

How can we give our fireplace a facelift and at the same time solve this persistent problem??
