I had a privet hedge along the side of my property(about 40 ft long). Last year, I dug out about half of it, first by cutting all of the branches out and then by taking an axe to the roots and pulling them out as much as possible. In the area where I dug up the roots, I'm struggling with a great deal of shoots this year. (i.e. I have to pull out "mini privets" almost every week). I'm looking to pull out the remaining 20 feet this year and am wondering if there is some other method I could use to ensure less shoot growth -- I'd ultimately like to reclaim this space and use it as a border garden. Any suggestions on how to go about this? Chemicals?
