Present damage

Thanks for the advice!! I think that this makes up my mind that I will have a tree removal service take down the tree. I'm almost positive that my home insurance would have covered me, but I'd rather use the service's insurance (and experience!) if something were to happen. But, I still want to try and remove that root myself, which leads me to one other question...

The porch has already been pushed up about 4-6 inches from the root, causing mostly cosmetic damage at this point. When I make my move to remove the root, what would you recommend to keep the porch from settling too fast and making the damage something more substantial? I've seen jacks used on TOP of the porch when repairs are done to a second floor, but will that work for under the porch? Or should I try some other method?
