preparing wall for paint or wallpaper

Posted by katerina on February 5th, 2000 07:58 PM

100 yr. old home, 3rd floor room just took down 30yr. old wall paper, under that was a gauze, got that off, under that, glue (lots) working on that. Now seeing imperfections and slight settling cracks. Do I fill and sand next? It is going to take weeks to get all that wall paper glue off with Dif (it's really thick and dark). What do I need to do to prep for paint? What materials do you recommend? Question #2: Oak wainscotting in dining room, very dark, almost black, what can I use to lighten it up a few shades, bleach?
