power-venting the furnace a good idea?

Just finished gutting the parlor and found a fireplace behind the wall. The fireplace on the dining room side is bricked in. I'd love to open them both up and have working fireplaces on both sides as I'm sure they had many moon ago. Problem: the furnace is using the chimney and it's too narrow for a dual flue-type-deal.

My contractor suggeted power-venting the furnace. He's not the greatest on explanations. Can you tell me what that entails and whether or not it's a good idea? Will it lessen the efficiency of the furnace?

My building inspector was so happy to find one good thing about this house - a properly vented furnace - and here I go wanting to mess with it.
