No, the heating or AC is not on. It is not the pipes. I know what that sounds like.
The sounds are coming from the walls and ceiling area. I am convinced it must be some type of swelling in the wood, but come on, the house is 10 years old.
I live in Northern CA where the daytime temps are in the 70s or 80s and the night temps are 48 - 49 now. A pretty good swing in temp, and the temps until recently have been in the 90's.
This house has lot of drywall, all the way up to the ceilings. Very high ceilings. Some of the cracking kind of sounds like nail pops in drywall, but I don't see any nail pops anywhere.
Also, the house was just repainted and stucco patched in areas. Could some of the cracking-popping sounds be related to the stucco drying and expanding to it's new climate?
