I was told by a "native" to these parts that the houses of my age were either yellow pine or poplar when it comes to the clapboard. These were common "hard woods" for exteriors at the turn of the century here. However, they didn't hold paint well. That's why I included the kind of wood I had on my house. I had it confirmed that indeed it was poplar. The interiors were solely oak which of coarse I'm finished with that. Looking back, that was the easy part. I have considered chemical stripping. I'm just not sure how many coats I will need, and it sounds like going to bare wood completely. Would that also entail the use of TSP to clean the entire exterior? I am open to all possibilities.
