Andrew, I have similiar surroundings with all ceilings having popcorn. I found that it is posible to paint popcorn after a few slight mistakes. For the best results, use a thick napped roller (good quality), excellant paint, (you will need a thick paint) Dutch Boy Satin Enamel worked the best for me, and little pressure on the roller because the popcorn will slide or come off on the roller leaving smooth spots on the ceiling. You will find the popcorn texture will consume a lot of paint (1-gal. for a 10x9 ceiling) but after your finished, i'm sure you will be impressed. Spray painting was an option of mine until I figured out the cost of a contractor and the price of all the equipment that was involved along with the tapeing and covering. Compare that to the cost of paint and a few rollers. Good luck on your project.
