Polypropilene Shakes vs Standard vinyl Siding

Posted by Jorge Orofino on December 1st, 2002 11:56 PM

I'm fixing and remodeling my house. It's a beautiful 70 years colonial house in Bay Shore, Long Island. I'm looking for replacing the siding and the roofing and I call different companies to do the job. The house has two sidings, one on top of the other. The older is cedar shakes and the top one is asphalt shingles. One of the companies that gave me estimates said that it's not necessary to remove the old siding. They will install 3/4 flat insulation and over that the vinyl siding. I don't know if that is appropriate. I'd appreciate to have your opinion.
The other question is about the kind of siding. It is a beautiful old house and I don't want it to look cheap. For that reason I peak a nice white polypropylene shakes siding like the Georgian-Pacific product but the salesman of one of the company that gave me the estimate said that this product is not good, donít' going to last more than 5 years and the cost is almost the double. I'd appreciate your comments on that.
