polarity of wires

I have a phone jack checker. Red light means no good. Green light means good.
I have a mixture of red and green lights in 9 wall jacks.
The good (green) light is on when the green jack wire is connected to Blue/white & the red jack wire is connected to the white/blue wire.
In the jacks wired --- red jack wire is connected to blue/white and green jack wire is connected to white/blue, the tester shows a green light(good).
I would light to know which is correct.
How do I know which terminal post does the blue/white connect to on the outside main line fron telephone pole. Same for the white/blue.
I have a volt- ohm meter to check with.
