Plywood AND Durock for floor underlayment?

Posted by Melissa on September 3rd, 2000 02:35 PM

Hi, I've gotten my toilet out (thanks to you folks!) and removed the vinyl flooring in my bathroom. Underneath the vinyl flooring is really crappy plywood, installed in pieces, and screwed haphazardly into the subfloor. What I'd like to do is remove the plywood and replace it with a sheet of Durock backer board.

However, everything I've read seems to assume that you always have a plywood sheet in place. Also, it seems to require a min. depth of 1.25", so I may have to get 2 sheets of backer board to make that requirement.

My question is, can I safely remove the plywood over the subfloor and replace it with backerboard? It would also lower my floor which I need for ceramic tile!

Thanks so much. You folks are great.
