Jay J,
I once built an ash hardwood floor that had 640 screws holding it in place. The screws were countersunk in the face of the planking and 1/2 inch hardwood tapered plugs were glued and driven in place. I know that ash has a high expansion/contraction rate. In the 15 years I lived in that house, not a plug came loose. A 1 inch plug may pose a problem, but I would give it a try. Louis should get tapered plugs if he can.
