Plugging a product ;-)

Heck Henry, plug cutters and other accessories have been around since hand tool days, you can still find 'em for brace bit drivers at flea markets, so no, you don't need a drill press. Now, concerning the situation you relate, you may simply have had a poorly sharpened one- it happens. As to plug availability: any home center carries the little poly bags of them, and Birch will work well with Pine or most any closed-cell wood species, it being next to impossible to tell the difference once installed. As to filling screw holes, the best job is obtained when *ALL* the finish schedule is complete, only then can you get a true match of tones with an inert filler.
