Hi, Everything Jay says is correct procedure for large defects and if you have the inclination, you might want to go to all the trouble to take up boards and make a big mess. For my money I would just plug it and be done with it in a half an hour instead of tearing up half your house. These are only 1" holes and are pretty small. Just use epoxy to make sure they won't come loose. If you are looking to have a perfect, blemish free, defect free floor and can't stand looking at a one inch patch, then just do what Jay says.
