Sorry, I mean plenum rated wire. What I want to
know is if I run wire from basement to attic do
need to use it? I really don't want to because
from what I've read the cost differential, for say
Cat 5, is substantial if I'm using a lot (2 home
runs per outlet). I don't plan on using returns
if I don't have to. I understand if I do use
returns I need plenum rated wire. But what if I
open a large space between studs myself (not used
as a return), but runs from basement to attic?
I was wondering, if I ran conduit in that hole, does
that make a difference.

Essentially, I want to run a lot of phone/coax to
the rooms upstairs. I need to get it to the attic.
I would prefer to not use returns and to not use
plenum rated wire (cost). Is this possible?
