plaster walls

Posted by sonja on September 28th, 1999 03:33 PM

i was recently in india and fell in love with some of the ethnic plaster work there. i'm also really attracted to the rough unfinished look of some adobe homes and i'm interested in trying to achieve this myself. there is so little information available on working with plaster and what i am finding is suggesting that it is a very specialized trade that is unsuitable for DIYers. i'm not sure i believe this. i see a renaissance of plaster coming with the resurgance of cob, straw bale, rammed earth and other alternative housing methods. it is environmentally friendly, safe, and beautiful! i have recently bought a house with, unfortunately, lead paint on the walls so i am hesitant to rip out the walls in order to find a suitable ground for the plaster to "grab". does anyone have any suggestions, helpful books, other web sites?
thanks, sonja
