I have an older home (90 year old) and have some experienc with plastering walls. The first thing I would suggest is to make sure you get rid of all the mildew. Depending on the size of the area will depend on whether you want to do the plastering yourself. If its small, you can do it yourself, but if its large or deep it may be difficult. What I am doing in a hallway (that has wallpaper that is painted over and large cracks in the plaster) is to hang the paintable wallpaper. This will save a lot of time and will hide the inperfections in the wall without losing the plastering. The final suggestion is to tear the wall down and have a professional put up wallboard.
