I need help! I have a brick house built around 1941, From the basement, I can look up at the joists and see the pine floors on a diagnal. They are about 8" wide.
The Problem:
The old timer who built the house, installed a "particle board" over the pine subfloor and then a congoleum. It look sglued down. The pine looks nice from the basement view, but I have not seen it on the top floor. I noticed some small gaps in the subfloor looking at it from the basement.

I am curious to know if this pine subfloor can be used as the woood floor in my house? I plan to get a closer look by cutting the underlayment in the closet in order to get a look at the surface of the pine floor. Does it matter if there are small gaps betweeen the wood? How about finishing methods? Or should I just install a new pine floor over this pine subfloor? PLEASE advice,
