Can't recall the brand of floor oil, might have been Watco. You can use anything you want to use, but most varnishes and especially poly have to be either stripped or sanded off. The oil is not as durable but easy to repair. Dogs do scratch the floor (we have one, about 40 lbs.). Any finish can be scratched but poly is probably about the best. No stain penetrates very deeply, certainly not deep enough to hide scratches. We would just wipe over them with the stain we used, let it set and wipe thoroughly then wipe on some oil, let set a spell, then wipe and let dry. My in-laws use a tongue and grooved southern yellow pine floor that is harder than white pine and looks about the same. It is more expensive however.
