Arlene, I can't tell you about that particular episode but did see it. I have made frames of all sizes and in everything from pine, to poplar to oak. What I will tell you honestly is that it will take you a little molding to learn how to do it right. Good equipment helps. You do not need that $200 angle trimmer, but a really good miter saw or building a good 45 degree sled for a table saw is critical.
As I recall, they used stock moldings glued together for the rabbet section and that works if you have tons of clamps. The real "secret" to the frames shown was the wax they used for finishing. You might check other parts of this site for a link to the place that markets the wax. Similar wax is available in specialty woodworking stores or their web sites.
