Take a flat oil paint - cut it about 4:1 with paint thinner - apply it like stain to your raw wood (wipe on and off with a rag - brush on/wipe off with a rag).

The idea is that it gives you a less transparent finish than a s/t stain.

You can finish it with oil or latex poly when its dry (usually overnight)
