My first jump to conclusion reaction was, you did not leave the gap up against the floor, but you said that you did.

I therefore, guess again that the sliding of the heavy flooring caused a wave action and pushed the pergo in the direction of the slide and did buckle. I can see this with heavy furniture especially if the furniture was possibly slid across the floor for positioning instead of placement. I am only speculating.
