We now believe that the paste is not a paste but is a primer used to fix the wall so the wallpaper would stick. It left brown brush marks and some of the mural was missed and comes through clearly.

We have tried the gentle scrubbing and not one bit of the coating has come off yet. We even tried one of the enzyme solutions and it didn't touch it.

Is there anyway to remove the primer without damaging the mural?
