Painting white vinyl siding

Hi all,

I know that you can paint vinyl siding and have read many faqs and info on prepping, cleaning, etc. The one question I have is this: I just bought a house with white vinyl siding that is showing its age, and I'd like to paint it a light, pastel shade of grey or cream, or maybe tan. I've read in a variety of places that you shouldn't go darker than the original color, but was wondering how strict you needed to follow this. I know that going from white to something like red or burgundy wouldn't be a good idea, but wondered whether you run the risk of warping if you go from white to a fairly light shade like those I mentioned.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
